Torch Statistics
The Torch for our Relay is one of the largest in Olympic history. Its size represents that of our country and was crafted by Bombardier to represent fluid lines made by Canadian pastimes such as skiing, figure skating, hockey etc. It weighs just over 3 pounds and runs on a combination of butane and propane. 2 full time Bombardier staff travel with our team to ensure each Torch is calibrated for the largest possible flame to arise out of the Torch. Burn time runs approximately 7-12 minutes depending on how much they have calibrated the Torch. After each person completes their segment we promptly disengage the Torch by cutting the line and removing the canister; this is done to ensure that it can never be used again.
Each Torchbearer carries the Torch knowing at that exact moment they are the only person in the world to bear the Olympic Flame; it is an honour that only a select few can call their own. The best evidence the Torchbearer gets to keep is the charred remains on the top half of their Torch. The Flame causes the white plastic to turn black with soot and the majority of Torchbearers choose to preserve this look by spraying their Torch with enamel. The $400 price tag is quite reasonable considering it is below cost and less than the purchase price of previous Relays.
